Gear with an "S", "E" and "* like symbol" beside

I've fallen into the hands of many inexperienced mechanics and this forum just showed me the light. I drive a 318is / 320iA Coupé Automatic and I have a 3-option button just beside my gear with an "S", "E" and "* like symbol". Please what are this options for?

Sport, Economy and Winter.
Mine does have the the same but Economy doesn't seem to work :/

Prison answered perfectly but I'll just add that;
Economy is designed for minimized fuel consumption, Sports delays your upshifts, Winter in "D" shifts a little different and when 2,3 or 4 in will stay in that gear and won't downshift.

Here S=Sport, E=Economy and *=winter.

Hate to say this again but, samabhi12, is it really necessary to revive old threads only to repeat answers that others have already put forward?
